Junín earthquake: Dozens homeless, homes destroyed, historical sites damaged

Pumpunya, Peru – Dozens of people slept outdoors after a powerful earthquake struck the Junín region, leaving families displaced and homes destroyed. Preliminary reports indicate at least 49 houses collapsed in Pumpunya alone, with over 200 residents left without shelter.

The regional toll from the quake includes five fatalities, dozens of injuries, and more than 300 affected individuals across Junín.

The tremor, which hit Saturday night with an epicenter near Chupaca, has caused widespread damage across the region. Authorities confirmed five deaths, numerous injuries, and over 300 people affected in total. The fear of aftershocks prompted many to seek refuge in open spaces, where temporary tents have been erected to provide humanitarian aid.

Due to the fear of new aftershocks, people spent the night in open spaces and began to receive humanitarian aid through the installation of temporary tents.

Beyond residential damage, the earthquake also impacted the area's historical heritage. The Ministry of Culture is assessing the damage to the Cani Cruz of the old Convent of Santiago de León in Chongos Bajo, a significant local monument. Rescue and aid teams from Indeci, the Ministry of Health, and the regional government are continuing damage assessments and providing assistance to those affected.
