K League to proceed with games amid heatwave, unlike suspended baseball

Professional baseball games have been suspended for two days due to extreme heat, prompting a meeting to discuss comprehensive countermeasures, while the professional football league K League plans to respond according to its regulations.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced the suspension of all professional baseball games for August 5th and 6th. An emergency executive committee meeting is scheduled for August 6th to discuss heatwave-related measures. This suspension affects both the KBO League and the Futures League. There is a possibility that games scheduled for August 7th to 9th could also be canceled if the heatwave persists.

Amidst the ongoing heatwave, attention is turning to the K League, which is currently in its season. Six K League 2 matches are scheduled for August 7th, with remaining K League 2 games and K League 1 matches set for August 8th and 9th. However, as of the afternoon of August 5th, the K League has not considered canceling any matches due to the heatwave.

A K League official stated that while the league's club support team is monitoring the situation, there are no immediate plans to cancel weekend games. "We have regulations for heatwaves, so we will proceed according to those regulations," the official said. These regulations include adjusting match times to evening games, implementing cooling breaks during matches, and watering the field. Additionally, since May 31st, safety campaign videos related to heatwaves have been broadcast on stadium scoreboards for all matches until September 28th.

Since 2025, the K League competition regulations have included heatwaves as a reason for suspending or postponing matches, under Article 16 concerning adverse weather conditions or stadium facility issues. Despite these measures, a spectator did experience breathing difficulties due to the heat at a K League match on July 12th, highlighting the need for the K League to actively address the impact of extreme heat.
