KAI Adds Train Service and Capacity After Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption

Indonesia’s state railway operator has added a late-evening train from Malang to Jakarta and expanded two services from Surabaya after the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

KAI Daop 8 Surabaya will operate an additional Gajayana train from Malang Station to Gambir Station. The service will depart at 8:15 p.m. local time, offering passengers in Malang and surrounding areas another travel option to Jakarta.

As a response to the conditions caused by the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, KAI Daop 8 Surabaya is adjusting its services by operating one additional train from Malang and increasing capacity on two trains departing from Surabaya Pasarturi.

The operator will also add coaches to two trains departing from Surabaya Pasarturi. The number of executive coaches on the Surabaya Pasarturi-Gambir Anggrek service will rise from eight to nine. On the Surabaya Pasarturi-Pasarsenen Gumarang service, New Generation economy coaches will increase from five to seven, bringing the train’s composition to four executive and seven New Generation economy coaches.

We are doing this to provide more travel choices while accommodating the public’s needs in using rail transportation.

Mahendro Trang Bawono, public relations manager for KAI Daop 8 Surabaya, said the adjustments respond to the eruption and accommodate people traveling from East Java to Jakarta. KAI is monitoring the eruption’s effects and coordinating with relevant authorities to evaluate operations as conditions change.

The operator advised passengers to monitor their surroundings and health during travel, including by wearing masks if volcanic dust or ash is present. It also urged customers to book through official KAI channels and arrive early for inspection and boarding. KAI said similar train additions were also being made in Yogyakarta and Semarang.
