Kairouan to Host 364 Events for Prophet's Birth Celebration Focused on Tolerance

Tunisia's Ministry of Religious Affairs is orchestrating a vast national program of over 10,500 religious activities to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. The spiritual heartland of Kairouan is set to be a focal point, hosting 54th edition of its major theological conference alongside 364 other events.

These programs include conferences, courses, competitions for memorizing the Holy Quran and the prophetic Hadith, dictations, Quranic and Hadith conclusions, religious vigils, and other diverse activities.

This year's conference in Kairouan, themed "Preservation of Human Life," will emphasize rejecting hate speech and promoting tolerance. The regional directorate of religious affairs has outlined a program that includes academic lectures, Quranic recitation competitions, traditional religious song vigils, and heritage exhibitions showcasing ancient theological learning methods.

These local initiatives in Kairouan are part of a broader national effort coordinated by the ministry. The 10,500 nationwide events encompass conferences, courses, memorization contests for the Quran and Hadith, and various religious observances. The activities are overseen by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Ahmed Bouhali, with doctrinal input from the Mufti of the Republic and the president of the University of Zitouna.

The intellectual gatherings, spanning two days, will delve into the doctrinal concept of the sanctity of existence and the protection of individual physical and moral integrity. This focus is intended to counter contemporary extremist deviations by highlighting the values of fraternity and concord inherent in the prophetic tradition. The Great Mosque Okba Ibn Nafaa in Kairouan serves as the epicenter for this spiritual renewal, symbolizing the ministry's commitment to preserving ancestral traditions while adapting theological discourse for modern times.

The activities include media programs in cooperation with the Radio and Television Establishment, the exhibition of Quranic schools (Kouttabs), and the monitoring of celebrations at the Grand Mosque and central mosques.
