Kamwenge Contractors Warned Against Substandard Work On Shs1bn School Projects

Contractors undertaking significant education infrastructure projects in Uganda's Kamwenge District have been issued a stern warning: substandard facilities will not be accepted. Officials stated that school projects failing to meet the required standards will not be commissioned, emphasizing the importance of quality and timely completion. This warning was delivered during the technical handover of sites for construction works at Mpanga Parents' Secondary School and Bigodi Secondary School.

The projects, funded under the Uganda Secondary Education Expansion Project (USEEP) by the Ministry of Education and Sports, aim to enhance educational infrastructure. At Mpanga Parents' Secondary School, Unified Engineering and Investment Limited is tasked with constructing four furnished classrooms and a science laboratory for Shs849.4 million. They have been given two weeks for mobilization and six months for completion. Eng. Aggrey Atukwasa, head of the USEEP Project Implementation Unit for the Tooro Sub-region, stressed that poor workmanship, delays, and non-compliance with specifications would jeopardize the durability of the facilities. He cautioned against unnecessary extensions, noting past issues where delays led to compromised quality.

Meanwhile, Andy Mucho Investments Limited will construct two five-stance latrines at Bigodi Secondary School for Shs220.04 million. The company has also committed to meeting the required standards and timelines. Eng. Cuthbert Abigaba Mirembe, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports, called for joint monitoring by school authorities, communities, and government officials. He urged contractors to prioritize construction quality over administrative tasks. Kamwenge District LCV Chairperson Joseph Karungi encouraged contractors to use genuine materials and advised school administrators to maintain proper site plans for future developments.
