Kane before Champions League opener against Bodø/Glimt: “This has to be our year”

Harry Kane has made his ambition clear before Bayern Munich’s Champions League campaign begins: this has to be the season the club finally wins European football’s biggest prize.

“We are very close. Last season, small details made the difference. We are going into this season saying: this has to be our year,” Kane, the England captain, told TNT Sports. Bayern reached the semifinals last season but lost to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, going down 5-4 in France before a 1-1 draw in Munich ended their run.

Kane said success in the competition depends on more than simply being the strongest team. “In the Champions League, it is not only about being the best team. Sometimes you also need the necessary luck at the right moment,” he said. The Bundesliga’s top scorer added that Bayern must find the small margin that allows them to progress and ultimately lift the trophy.

The campaign begins on Thursday with a home match against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt. Bayern’s other opponents include this year’s finalist Arsenal, Manchester United and Atlético Madrid.

At 33, Kane said retirement is not on his mind. He is in talks with Bayern about a contract extending beyond summer 2027. “At this stage of my career, I am mainly trying to enjoy these moments. I feel so good at the moment that I am thinking more about how to preserve this state for as long as possible,” he said. Kane added that he still wants to win trophies at club level and with the national team.
