Kano APC stalwart hails airport reforms, cites global competition push

Nigeria's airports are undergoing a significant transformation, aiming to compete on a global scale through infrastructure renewal, enhanced governance, and digital innovation. A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Umar Idris Shuaibu, lauded the ongoing reforms spearheaded by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

What we are witnessing today is not merely the rehabilitation of airport infrastructure; it is a comprehensive institutional reform agenda aimed at transforming Nigeria’s airports into modern gateways for commerce, tourism, investment and national development.

Shuaibu described the current period as one of the most substantial transformations in Nigeria's aviation sector, addressing years of aging facilities, operational inefficiencies, and security concerns. He credited the effective collaboration between FAAN Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku for creating a clear distinction between governance and management. This synergy, he believes, allows FAAN to pursue long-term reforms that are redefining airport operations nationwide.

The reforms extend beyond mere cosmetic upgrades, focusing on comprehensive institutional change. Shuaibu pointed to major infrastructure upgrades at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, including runway and taxiway rehabilitation, as well as terminal facility improvements. Similar enhancements in power supply, terminal expansion, and airfield lighting are being implemented across airports in Kano, Katsina, Jos, Enugu, Ilorin, Minna, and other locations.

Every successful public institution requires a clear distinction between governance and management. Dr. Ganduje is providing strategic leadership, policy direction and institutional oversight, while Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku is driving the day-to-day execution of reforms focused on operational efficiency, safety, customer satisfaction and financial sustainability. That synergy has become one of FAAN’s defining strengths.

Furthermore, FAAN is embracing environmental sustainability with innovative initiatives like digital color-coded recycling bins at the Lagos airport. The deployment of electric buses and vehicles at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja demonstrates a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and aligning Nigerian airports with global environmental standards. These efforts position Nigeria's airports as modern gateways for commerce, tourism, and national development.
