Kano gov approves salary hike for two state universities’ staff

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved a new salary structure for both academic and non-academic staff at the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano. This decision aims to enhance industrial harmony and improve the welfare of staff in these institutions.

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the implementation of a new salary review for Academic and Non-Academic Staff of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano.

The new remuneration package mirrors the federal government's salary structure implemented in federal universities across Nigeria. The approval follows recommendations from a committee established by the State Executive Council, which examined the universities' requests to adopt the new salary scale. The revised package is set to take effect from January 2026, with payments commencing in September 2026.

The implementation carries a substantial financial implication for the state. The total monthly cost for both universities is estimated at ₦391,847,555.24, accumulating to an annual figure of ₦4,702,170,662.88. For Aliko Dangote University, the monthly cost is ₦228,195,210.83, while Northwest University's monthly cost is ₦163,652,344.41.

Under the approved arrangement, the new remuneration package will take effect from January 2026, while payment will commence in September 2026.

The state government has allocated ₦1,567,390,220.96 in the 2026 Supplementary Budget to cover payments from September to December 2026. Arrears from January to August 2026, amounting to ₦3,134,780,441.92, will be addressed in the 2027 Budget. Governor Yusuf also approved the consideration of visitation panels for these and other tertiary institutions in the state.

The decision, according to the committee’s report, is aimed at ensuring industrial harmony and improving the welfare of staff of the two institutions, in line with the implementation of the new remuneration package in federal universities and other state-owned universities.
