Kano probes sale of substandard solar panels

The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) has launched an investigation into allegations that solar panels sold in the region are not meeting their advertised power output specifications. The probe follows complaints from members of the public who claim the panels' actual performance falls short of the ratings indicated on their labels.

Dr. Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, the Executive Secretary of the KCPC, stated that the council will conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. If the claims are substantiated, appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with consumer protection laws. "We will ensure that consumers are protected from deceptive trade practices and products that do not meet approved quality standards," he assured.

Garba-Muhammad commended the individuals who brought the issue to the council's attention, reaffirming the KCPC's dedication to safeguarding consumers from substandard products, fostering fair trade, and ensuring market accountability. The council previously reported confiscating over ₦300 million worth of substandard goods in the three months preceding July 17.

Yusuf Sani, who submitted a petition on behalf of the complainants, highlighted concerns about some solar panel dealers misleading consumers. He pointed out a significant discrepancy between the labeled capacity and the actual power generated by the panels. Sani warned that using such substandard panels could damage batteries used for energy storage and potentially lead to battery explosions. He also alleged that many of these products were imported without adequate quality assurance or compliance with required standards.
