Kano Rainstorms Kill Nine and Displace More Than 4,500 in Eight Months, Official Says

Rainstorms and windstorms killed nine people and displaced 4,524 others across eight local government areas of Kano State between January and August 2026, according to the State Emergency Management Agency.

The agency’s Executive Secretary, Isyaku Kubarachi, said 49 people also suffered injuries during the period. The affected areas were Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono and Kibiya.

A total of nine persons lost their lives, 49 were injured and 4,524 others were displaced as a result of windstorm/rainstorm between January and August 2026.

Minjibir recorded 712 victims, while Bichi had 775, the highest figure among the eight areas. Kibiya recorded 630 victims, Shanono 530, Ajingi 415, Gaya 342, Rimin Gado 233 and Kabo 102.

During the period under review, windstorms and rainstorms accounted for the majority of the affected persons in all six major disasters that happened in the state.

Kubarachi said windstorms and rainstorms affected more people than any other disaster among the six major disasters recorded in the state during the period. The agency has completed assessments and submitted reports to the Kano State Government for assistance to victims. Relief materials will be distributed once they arrive.

The figures come weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly urged the government to provide relief materials to communities affected by rainstorms and other disasters. Lawmakers adopted the motion during a July 29 plenary session.

The agency had compiled comprehensive reports and submitted them to the state government for assistance to victims. As soon as we receive relief materials, they will be distributed to them.
