Kano sanitation board warns roadside traders against indiscriminate waste disposal

The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board is cracking down on roadside traders who dispose of waste improperly. Managing Director Muhammad Salisu-Khalil issued a statement emphasizing the need for traders, particularly those selling maize and other food items, to provide waste bins at their businesses.

Those who are doing business along France Road, Katsina Road, Maiduguri Road, Zaria Road, Zoo Road should maintain proper sanitation.

The board highlighted that refuse dumped on roads and in drainage channels contributes to blocked waterways, accumulated waste, and environmental pollution. Specific areas like France Road, Katsina Road, Maiduguri Road, Zaria Road, and Zoo Road were mentioned as needing improved sanitation practices.

Despite daily street sweeping and sanitation exercises, the board expressed concern that traders often dump waste immediately after areas are cleaned. This undermines government efforts to maintain a clean environment, which the board stressed is a collective responsibility. Violators will face legal action, including prosecution in an environmental sanitation court. The board clarified its objective is not to hinder business but to ensure operations are conducted in a clean and environmentally responsible manner.
