Kano unveils task force to combat drug abuse

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched a significant offensive against substance abuse and political violence by inaugurating a Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and signing an Executive Order targeting thuggery. These measures signal the administration's commitment to addressing critical social and security challenges plaguing the state.

Governor Yusuf highlighted drug abuse as a primary threat to Kano's youth, directly linking it to increased violent crime, family breakdown, economic weakening, and social instability. The newly formed task force is designed to be a comprehensive response unit, focusing on intelligence gathering, enforcement actions, public awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation efforts. It will also foster collaboration among various security agencies and stakeholders.

To support the task force's operations, the governor pledged substantial resources, including funding, operational vehicles, and office accommodations. He assured the task force members of the independence required to execute their duties effectively. Furthermore, the administration is expanding rehabilitation services, with dedicated centers already established for male and female patients suffering from drug addiction.

The newly inaugurated Task Force will coordinate the state’s response to drug abuse through intelligence gathering, enforcement, public enlightenment, rehabilitation and collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

The Executive Order against thuggery aims to bolster the legal framework for dismantling criminal gangs and reducing political violence. Governor Yusuf stated that this order will empower security agencies in their efforts to maintain law and order across Kano. The chairman of the task force, Muhuyi Rimingado, acknowledged the responsibility and pledged to work collaboratively with traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community leaders to achieve the goals of combating drug abuse and fostering peace.

Governor Yusuf urged residents to actively participate by providing credible information and cooperating with security forces, emphasizing that tackling drug abuse and thuggery requires a collective effort. He expressed confidence that these initiatives will lead to a reduction in drug-related crimes and an overall improvement in security throughout Kano State.
