Kao Chia-yu backs Tung Tzu-wei as the best choice to transform Keelung

Former legislator Kao Chia-yu returned to Keelung’s Xinyi Market, where she grew up, to campaign with Democratic Progressive Party mayoral candidate Tung Tzu-wei. Market vendors warmly welcomed her as she walked through the stalls and sought support for Tung.

Kao called Tung the best candidate to understand Keelung residents’ needs, secure central government resources and give the city a new look. Tung said he wanted to draw on Kao’s deep connection to the market and use the visit to hear directly from vendors and local residents.

Xinyi Market is an important traditional commercial market, Tung said, and its renovation is a shared wish among people living nearby. If elected mayor, he said he would work to accelerate the market redevelopment plan and make shopping conditions more comfortable.

Kao said her family had operated a department store there, making the return especially warm. She argued that market redevelopment and urban renewal needed a more capable mayor to move forward. She praised Tung for spending years visiting neighborhoods and alleys, saying residents wanted a mayor who stood with them and handled matters personally.

Transportation, Kao said, remained the most direct daily hardship for people in Keelung. She said she often saw Keelung residents enduring difficult commutes to Taipei and believed Tung could secure better transportation rights for them. Kao also credited former Mayor Lin Yu-chang with bringing construction and a renewed sense of pride to Keelung, while saying she had not seen major projects under current Mayor George Hsieh. She said Tung would continue Lin’s achievements and restore the city’s pride.
