Kaohsiung hit-and-run leaves grandmother and grandson injured, sparking public anger

A grandmother and her 14-year-old grandson were left injured after a scooter collision in Kaohsiung, while the other rider fled the scene and triggered angry reactions online.

The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 4 at an intersection on Kainan Street in Linyuan District. The 68-year-old woman was riding with her grandson when their scooter collided with another. Both fell to the ground and suffered injuries.

A witness wrote online that he was furious after seeing the rider hit the pair and escape. He followed on his scooter but lost sight of the person at an intersection after encountering a red light. The witness said he also had to consider the safety of other people and himself. Online commenters praised him for trying to help, while noting that acting recklessly could create legal trouble.

Police said two scooters had collided, and the rider responsible left without stopping. The injured rider and passenger were taken to hospital. Officers have reviewed surveillance footage around the crash site and identified the fleeing rider, who will be notified to appear and explain the incident. Police said the case would be handled under the law.
