Kaohsiung Man Arrested for Drunk and Drugged Driving; Two Friends Detained for Interfering

Police in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, apprehended a 21-year-old man early Sunday morning after observing him drive away from the roadside without signaling. A subsequent traffic stop revealed the man was driving under the influence of both alcohol and drugs.

During the stop, the driver, identified by the surname Yan, failed a breathalyzer test and a saliva test indicated the presence of K-ketamine. Authorities cited Yan for failing to use a turn signal, not wearing a seatbelt, drunk driving, and drug driving. The vehicle was impounded, and his license and license plates were suspended.

The situation escalated when two friends of Yan, identified as Hong (21) and Lian (22), arrived in a separate car. They began shouting and interfering with the police officers' duties. Both were subsequently detained by the police under public order maintenance laws.

Yan faces a potential fine of up to NT$245,100 and has been transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutor's Office for further investigation on charges of public endangerment. Hong and Lian will be referred to the Kaohsiung District Court for adjudication on charges of obstructing official business.
