Kaohsiung Port container throughput drops below 10 million TEUs, world ranking slips

Kaohsiung Port's container throughput has consistently fallen below 10 million TEUs since 2020, causing its global ranking to slip outside the top 20. This decline has prompted the Ministry of Audit to request improvements from the Taiwan International Ports Corporation.

Despite a projected increase in revenue for the port authority, Kaohsiung Port's container volume has seen a significant drop. While its world ranking fell from 13th to outside the top 20, the port authority stated it is actively working to attract more shipping lines. Strategies include customized marketing incentives, enhancing route connectivity, and adjusting port cluster operations. The authority aims to stabilize existing cargo sources and explore new markets through precise marketing, port infrastructure upgrades, and improved software and hardware.

Recent data indicates fluctuations in container throughput. While the port authority's website shows a recovery to 9.228 million TEUs in 2024, it dipped again to 8.885 million TEUs in 2025. Global rankings also show a downward trend, with Kaohsiung Port listed as 21st in 2024 and 22nd in 2025, partly due to the influence of new ports like Guangxi Beibu Gulf Port in China.

The port authority emphasized that international temporary exhibitions are a common practice for museum collaboration. They urged the public and media to rely on official sources and avoid spreading unverified information.
