Kaohsiung's Meilan No. 2 suspension bridge reconstruction to finish mid-2028, will accommodate small trucks

The Kaohsiung City Government is undertaking a significant infrastructure project to rebuild the Meilan No. 2 suspension bridge in Taoyuan District. This vital crossing, which spans the Laonong River and is located near Provincial Highway 20 and the Meilan tunnel, serves as a crucial lifeline for transporting agricultural products and for emergency response in the area. The existing bridge, built in 1993, has been in service for over 30 years but its limited load-bearing capacity prevents trucks from using it.

Funded by NT$62.95 million from the central government, the new bridge is scheduled for completion by mid-2028. It will be constructed adjacent to the current structure, measuring approximately 127 meters in length and 2.4 meters in width. The design prioritizes enhanced load capacity, enabling small trucks and agricultural machinery to traverse it, thereby greatly improving logistical conditions for the local community.

Engineers are employing advanced techniques to ensure the bridge's durability and resilience, especially given the canyon's strong winds. These include the installation of wind-resistant cables, robust rock foundations, and a 'back-pull ground anchor' system designed to firmly secure the bridge's base deep within the bedrock. The bridge deck will be made of high-strength, weather-resistant materials, fortifying it against natural disasters and ensuring a stable passage for residents and goods.

The project is part of Kaohsiung City's broader commitment to developing public infrastructure in its indigenous districts. The new Meilan No. 2 bridge is expected not only to improve transportation but also to bolster disaster resilience, support local industry development, and provide a safer, more stable environment for residents, fulfilling their aspirations for safe return, economic progress, and sustainable living.
