Kaohsiung’s ‘Wild Mushroom Island’ Reborn for a Third Time After Two Weeks of Rain

A central median on Fengnan Road in Kaohsiung’s Fengshan District has become an unexpected “urban mushroom island” after two weeks of heavy rain.

Large white mushrooms suddenly appeared across the green grass, attracting passersby who stopped to take photographs. The fungi proved unusually persistent. Kaohsiung’s Parks Office sent workers to remove them from the roots on two occasions to prevent people from eating them, but the mushrooms reappeared within days after rain and sunlight.

The area has now entered what the report calls a third revival. Nearby residents were left wondering how the mushrooms could keep returning after repeated removals.

The Parks Office warned that the mushrooms, despite their harmless appearance, are green-spored parasols, a poisonous species known in Taiwan. Every part of the mushroom is toxic and can cause severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloody stools if eaten. Officials said underground mycelium and spores make the fungi difficult to eradicate while hot, humid weather continues.

The office also cautioned residents not to stop in the middle of the road to photograph the mushrooms and urged them not to pick roadside fungi for food.
