Karua Denied Entry Into Uganda, Dealing Setback to Besigye Defense Team

Kenyan Senior Counsel Martha Karua faced a fresh setback in her legal work in Uganda when immigration officials denied her entry at Entebbe International Airport. Karua, a key member of opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye's defense team, was instructed to return to Kenya without any given reason.

The incident occurred as Karua, accompanied by the President of the Law Society of Kenya, Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama, arrived to support Besigye's legal defense. While Kanjama was permitted entry, Karua was turned away.

This development further weakens Besigye's defense team. Senior Ugandan lawyer Erias Lukwago, another crucial member, is currently detained and facing charges of misprision of treason. Karua has been actively involved in Besigye's cases since early 2025, challenging his detention and advocating for fair hearing rights.

Karua's legal battles in Uganda are notable. She previously faced challenges obtaining a license to practice in the country, a decision that drew condemnation and threats of reciprocal action from the Law Society of Kenya. Ugandan authorities eventually relented under pressure, allowing her to join Besigye's defense.

The current situation leaves Besigye's defense team significantly short-handed, with Lukwago in detention and Karua barred from entering the country. Besigye, along with Hajj Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Oola, faces treason charges.
