Katarina Baban reveals how basketball player Domagoj Vuković won her over during an unforgettable summer

Katarina Baban is returning to television in a role she describes as unusually positive. In Nova TV’s new drama-comedy series “Accidental Family,” she plays Milena, one of three complete strangers whose circumstances turn them into a family. The series begins on Sept. 6 at 9:15 p.m.

Baban says she was pleased to read a character who starts out “uncorrupted, honest, pure and just.” Her recent television roles had either been villains from the beginning or characters whose softer side emerged only later. Milena, by contrast, believes honesty and justice come before everything else.

That conviction makes Milena blunt. Baban describes her as straightforward and sincere, someone who says exactly what she thinks and can therefore sound harsh. Baban says she is also honest, but not in the same immediate way. She considers how to phrase difficult things, whether the moment is right and how another person might receive her words. She attributes that habit partly to her tendency to overthink.

Asked whether she has regretted being brutally honest, Baban says it happens rarely. She does not want someone to feel bad simply because she felt a need to tell the truth, and believes every person requires a different approach. As her colleague Mirna Medaković Stepinac puts it, “You need tact and moderation.”

Baban also says viewers still sometimes call her by the names of characters she has played. During “Golden Dvori,” she responded to “Ana,” and during “U dobru i zlu,” to “Petra.” She says this happens more often early in an actor’s career, before audiences know the performer’s real name as well as the roles they play.
