Katsina gov combats food insecurity with 90,000-bag grain relief

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has initiated a significant relief effort by flagging off the distribution of 90,000 bags of assorted grains to vulnerable households. This intervention targets all 34 Local Government Areas within the state, aiming to cushion the impact of economic hardship and strengthen food security.

Our philosophy has remained clear: development must reach the grassroots, and the people must feel the presence and impact of government in their communities and daily lives.

The distribution ceremony, held in Kaita LGA, saw Governor Radda directing officials and stakeholders to ensure the grains reach the intended beneficiaries without discrimination or diversion. He reiterated his administration's philosophy that development must be felt at the grassroots. This initiative follows previous social support programs, including assistance for women in business and aid for 7,220 widows across the state.

Governor Radda acknowledged the contribution of the Aliko Dangote Foundation to food security efforts. He noted that lessons learned from prior exercises have improved the government's distribution mechanisms, particularly through Community Level Committees, focusing on better targeting and accountability.

The objective is not simply to distribute more, but to distribute better to improve targeting, strengthen accountability and ensure that government support reaches those for whom it is intended.

While emphasizing the importance of immediate relief, Radda stressed that palliative distribution alone is insufficient for a lasting solution to food insecurity. His administration pursues a dual strategy of immediate relief and sustainable economic empowerment. This includes providing farmers with subsidized fertilizer and agricultural inputs, alongside expanding irrigation systems through various technological means. The governor believes these investments are crucial for strengthening food production, reducing costs, creating rural employment, and improving household incomes, presenting a comprehensive approach to tackling food insecurity.
