Katsina residents appeal for reconstruction of dilapidated Dutsen-Safe-Yarkutungu road

Residents of Dutsen-Safe in Katsina State want Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to rebuild the road linking their community with the popular Yarkutungu market. They say its condition has crippled commercial activity and made daily travel hazardous.

The road has deteriorated over several years, residents told THISDAY during a visit to the area. Movement becomes particularly difficult during the rainy season, when floodwater covers parts of the route and leaves it muddy, slippery and nearly impassable.

I lived in this area for more than 20 years now, and the road has been a persistent concern to residents. It has been causing accidents. We are appealing to Governor Dikko Umaru Radda to come to our aid.

Babangida Abba, who said he had lived in the area for more than 20 years, described the road as a persistent problem. He said it had caused accidents despite repeated appeals to the state government and other authorities. He urged Radda to include the route in his urban and rural renewal projects, saying reconstruction would ease hardship and support local businesses.

Apart from the bad nature of the road, criminals have taken the opportunity to rob commuters at night.

Fatima Khalid, who sells children’s goods at Yarkutungu market, said the poor road had also created opportunities for criminals to attack commuters at night, especially on market days. James Chukwu said traders worried about moving their goods whenever it rained, while motorists avoided the road. Mohammed Idris added that repeated vehicle repairs had caused him significant financial losses.

Residents said rebuilding the road would improve access, reduce accidents and vehicle damage, ease movement during rainfall and support trade between the community and the market.
