Kazakhstan Gains FMD-Free Status, Boosting Livestock Export Prospects

Kazakhstan has officially been recognized as free of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) across its entire livestock sector, a significant achievement that positions it as the sole country in Central and Eastern Asia with this designation. The status is anticipated to bolster the nation's agricultural exports and enhance its access to global markets.

Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov announced the milestone during a government meeting on agricultural development. He stated that the FMD-free status "contributes to strengthening the export potential of Kazakhstan’s livestock products." The recognition was formally granted at the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) general session in Paris in May.

This development is viewed as a crucial step for Kazakhstan's agricultural industry, which the government identifies as a key driver for economic diversification and rural development. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov emphasized agriculture's strategic importance for food security, economic growth, and improving rural living standards. The announcement coincides with Kazakhstan's ongoing expansion in agricultural production and exports, supported by investments in veterinary infrastructure and animal health programs. Over the past two years, significant funds have been allocated to modernize veterinary facilities and laboratories, contributing to the sector's progress.
