Kazakhstan Takes Top Spot in Nomad Games Medal Table After Recount

Kazakhstan moved to the top of the VI World Nomad Games medal table after organizers corrected how three medals won by Kazakh athletes were counted.

Kyrgyzstan's presidential spokesman, Askat Alagozov, said the only technical discrepancy concerned the medal tally. The organizing committee decided to count separately the medals won by each of Kazakhstan's three athletes, putting Kazakhstan first in the overall team standings.

“Congratulations to our Kazakh brothers on the victory,” Alagozov said. He also praised Kyrgyz athletes, saying they had performed honorably and demonstrated strength and skill.

The spokesman highlighted kok-boru and jereed events as especially compelling, with Kyrgyz and Kazakh teams displaying a high level of play. He said the rivalry stayed on the field and that supporters from the two countries had no disagreements.

The games took place in Kyrgyzstan from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6. The opening ceremony was held at Bishkek Arena, while the main sporting, cultural and scientific events continued around Issyk-Kul. Final kokpar and kok-boru contests took place in Cholpon-Ata on Sept. 6, followed by the closing ceremony that evening. Alagozov described mutual respect, fair competition and unity between the Kyrgyz and Kazakh peoples as the event's main achievement.
