KDT’S of Linares and Cañaveral keep Festival Arre dancing through rain

Rain came and went, but it did not stop Festival Arre audiences from enjoying the classic corridos and cumbias performed on the first day at Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

KDT’S of Homero Guerrero Jr., heirs to Los Cadetes de Linares, were the first to take the Hacienda stage. Wearing matching yellow jackets and trousers with black boots and hats, they began with more familiar songs before announcing one of the most famous and controversial corridos in their repertoire.

“We’re going to sing this corrido that was censored on every radio station, but that continues to be heard thanks to you,” the group told the crowd before performing “El Carrito.” “El Palomino,” “No hay novedad” and other songs followed, with the audience singing along despite the light breeze and persistent drizzle.

After sunset, lights filled the stage as Emir Pavón and Grupo Cañaveral began their set with an instrumental medley. The cold could not compete with the warmth of the flames and the dancing that accompanied the band’s classic cumbias.

“Tiene Espinas el Rosal” became the night’s clear highlight. People in the crowd spun and danced, while lightning briefly illuminated the sky as Grupo Cañaveral performed a song that has become a fixture at gatherings across Mexico.
