Keelung's disaster maps outdated by years, audit flags risk to evacuation

Official evacuation and disaster potential maps for Keelung city are significantly outdated, raising concerns about the effectiveness of disaster response. An audit by the city's audit office revealed that maps published on the official websites of the Keelung Fire Bureau and district offices are 3 to 4 years old.

The audit office pointed out that these outdated maps could hinder the timely dissemination of critical information to the public during emergencies, potentially impacting evacuation procedures. The audit report noted that the work involved collecting data from various government agencies, including flood potential maps, debris flow potential maps, tsunami potential maps, volcanic hazard potential maps, and nuclear accident hazard potential maps.

In response to the audit's findings, the Keelung city government stated that updated information has been compiled. The Fire Bureau has been instructed to ensure district offices update their websites with the latest map data. This information will be formally provided annually to relevant units, and the "website information update check" will be incorporated into the performance evaluation for disaster prevention and relief work.
