Kerala woman dies day after suicide bid, family alleges abuse by in-laws

A 24-year-old woman has died in Kerala's Kasaragod district, one day after attempting suicide. Her family has accused her husband and mother-in-law of prolonged domestic abuse and mental harassment related to dowry demands, according to police reports.

The incident reportedly occurred late Saturday in Panalam. A police inspector at the Vidyanagar station confirmed that the woman's brother filed a First Information Report (FIR). The husband has been detained and is awaiting formal arrest on charges including abetment to suicide and cruelty under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

According to the police, the woman's family alleged she faced constant mental harassment over dowry. On Saturday, she was allegedly physically assaulted by her husband, who also confiscated her phone when she tried to contact her relatives. She then went to a neighbor's house to call her family.

When her brother and other family members arrived, an argument broke out between the two families. During the altercation, the woman went inside and drank a toxic cleaning agent in front of her brother and husband. Despite being rushed to a nearby government hospital, her condition worsened, and she passed away early Sunday. The couple had been married for just over a year and have a two-month-old child.

The woman’s family alleged that she was being mentally harassed over dowry and other matters by her husband and mother-in-law. On Saturday, she was physically assaulted by her husband and her phone was snatched away when she tried to contact her family.
