Kevin Keegan, a towering figure in English football and a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, has died at the age of 75. His family announced his passing on Monday, July 20, 2026, stating he died surrounded by his wife and daughters after a battle with stage four cancer.

Keegan had publicly disclosed his diagnosis in January 2026, following persistent abdominal symptoms. Despite the advanced stage of the illness, he reportedly maintained his characteristic humor and optimism, even discussing experimental treatments in June. While British media speculated about stomach cancer, the family has not specified the exact location of the tumor.

Born into a modest family in Armthorpe, Keegan's early life was marked by hardship, with his childhood home lacking electricity until he was ten. Despite his relatively short stature for an attacker, he overcame skepticism from coaches and rejections from clubs like Doncaster Rovers. His talent eventually earned him a move to Scunthorpe United, and in 1971, he joined Liverpool for approximately 33,000 pounds.

At Liverpool, Keegan became a legend, scoring 100 goals in 323 appearances and winning three English league titles, two UEFA Cups, an FA Cup, and the European Cup. His final match for the club was the 1977 European Cup final victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach. After his playing career, he also managed Newcastle United and the England national team.
