Kevin Pietersen Joins England Coaching Team Ahead of World Cup

Kevin Pietersen is putting on an England uniform again, more than a decade after his international career ended in a bitter Ashes defeat. The former captain has joined Brendon McCullum’s white-ball coaching team as a specialist mentor ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Pietersen will work with McCullum’s group during England’s upcoming T20 and one-day international series at home against Sri Lanka later this month, as well as in subsequent series. The 50-over World Cup will be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October 2027.

The South Africa-born batter played 136 one-day internationals and 37 T20 matches for England, scoring more than 5,500 runs. He also made 8,181 runs in 104 Test matches. His playing career was not without controversy, as he fell out with several players and coaches before England’s Ashes whitewash in Australia in 2013-14 brought his international career to a bitter end.

Pietersen, 46, has since worked as a mentor for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. He said he was “immensely proud” to help England pursue a World Cup in South Africa and called returning to the England uniform “a profound honour and a deeply special moment.” McCullum said Pietersen’s experience, knowledge and stature could make a significant contribution to the team.
