Key cultural site: Agreement reached on the future of the RAW grounds

After years of conflict, an agreement has been reached on the future of Berlin's RAW site in Friedrichshain. This decision aims to preserve the numerous clubs, pubs, studios, and sports and cultural offerings located on the former industrial grounds. Under the new plan, a general tenant will enter into a 30-year lease agreement with the property owner. This arrangement is intended to secure the existing cultural and recreational facilities. The district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg will temporarily act as an interim tenant starting in September 2026 for two years, with a possible one-year extension. The identity of the long-term general tenant remains undecided. In addition to preserving the cultural spaces, the agreement includes plans to construct approximately 300 rental apartments on the site. A significant portion, 30%, of these new residences will be designated as social housing. The development plans are contingent on the approval of the zoning plan by the House of Representatives' main committee and the district's representative assembly.
