Key suspect in massive French wildfire investigation is ONF agent

A significant development has occurred in the investigation into the devastating 2025 Corbières wildfire, France's most destructive blaze in half a century. An agent from the National Forestry Office (ONF) has been formally placed under investigation, marking a potential turning point in understanding how the inferno began.

The agent, who denies any wrongdoing, faces charges of "aggravated involuntary destruction by fire." He was taken into custody on Tuesday along with two other ONF agents, but the latter were released without charges. The prosecutor's office in Montpellier has not disclosed specific details regarding the allegations against the investigated agent.

According to local reports, investigators are examining the possibility that a cigarette carelessly discarded from a patrol vehicle may have ignited the massive fire. This hypothesis emerged during the initial custody of the three agents, which were the first known detentions in the complex inquiry into the origins of the Ribaute fire. The blaze, which started on August 5, 2025, spread rapidly across 17,000 hectares, consuming over 11,000 hectares before being extinguished after three weeks.

Experts had previously ruled out natural causes for the fire, pointing towards a human origin. While the ONF confirmed the agents' questioning, the organization stated it does not have access to the case file and is unaware of the specific accusations. The ONF agent, described as a forest protection auxiliary involved in fire prevention patrols, is reportedly in shock, as are his colleagues. The mayor of Ribaute at the time of the fire expressed astonishment that someone dedicated to nature conservation could be implicated in such a disaster, which has left a scarred landscape and impacted local tourism.
