KEYAMO AND THE OGWASHI-UKU MISSED LANDING

The recent occurrence of a private airplane diverting due to operational constraints after missing its landing at Ogwashi-Uku serves as a potent metaphor for a long-overdue development: the expansion and modernization of Asaba Airport. This incident, while potentially explainable by technical factors, underscores a missed opportunity for enhancing regional connectivity.

Asaba Airport, situated in Delta State, possesses significant strategic potential. Its location makes it a vital transit corridor linking northern Asaba to southern Warri, and it serves a region with tens of millions of Nigerians, characterized by vibrant entrepreneurial activity. Currently, international travelers from these South-East and South-South regions endure inconvenient, costly, and economically inefficient long road journeys to Lagos or Port Harcourt to access international flights.

The author, in a personal note to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Festus Keyamo, advocated for upgrading Asaba Airport into an international-standard aviation hub. This upgrade would position the airport as a key gateway, directly connecting these populous regions to global destinations and alleviating the current travel burdens.
