Khamenei appoints two formational IRGC leaders to senior political positions within regime

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed two prominent figures with deep ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to significant political positions within the regime. These appointments signal a continued consolidation of power by figures associated with the IRGC.

Mohsen Rezaee, a long-serving former commander of the IRGC from 1981 to 1997, has been named Khamenei's representative to the Supreme National Security Council. Rezaee has a history of presidential runs, having placed third in 2009, fourth in 2013, and second in 2021. He has also been a member of the Expediency Discernment Council since 1997 and was appointed as Khamenei's military advisor in March.

Additionally, Mohammed Bagher Zolghadr, who has held numerous senior roles within the IRGC since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, including deputy chief from 1997 to 2006, has been appointed as Khamenei's political advisor. Zolghadr has previously advocated for the IRGC to exert greater control over Iranian politics.

These appointments place individuals with extensive military and security backgrounds in key political advisory and decision-making roles. Their influence within the regime's political apparatus is likely to be substantial, reflecting a strategic move to integrate IRGC leadership more directly into the country's political landscape.
