Kiboga Residents Turn to Collective Saving to Fight Poverty

Residents of Mutuba 11 in Muwanga Sub-county, Kiboga District, say collective saving has changed how they manage their households and plan for the future.

Through the CBS Pewosa Nabwendo Bisobooka group, members have accumulated and shared more than 30 million Ugandan shillings. They say the money has created opportunities to invest and meet household needs that were previously difficult to afford.

The group was established with support from CBS Pewosa to promote economic empowerment and collective action in Buganda. Members first received training on saving, hard work and responsible financial management. At a gathering celebrating the group’s achievements, they credited regular contributions and cooperation with gradually improving their economic circumstances.

Edith Namazzi, who led the training, told members that saving alone would not be enough. “Saving is only one part of the journey. Members must also work hard and invest responsibly so that their savings can translate into lasting improvements in their lives,” she said. Asafu Mukiibi, who introduced the approach in Mutuba 11, said he sought support from CBS Pewosa after recognising the need for communities to work together against poverty. Buganda Kingdom and local leaders encouraged more people in Ssingo, particularly young people, to join such groups.
