Killarney School students to temporarily relocate after summer storm damage

Students at Killarney School in north Edmonton will begin the academic year in a different location due to extensive damage caused by a severe summer storm. On July 15, a powerful thunderstorm swept through the area, ripping sections of the roof off the school and causing flooding within the building.

Edmonton Fire Rescue crews, along with custodial and security personnel, responded to the aftermath of the storm, which left debris scattered around the school grounds. While repair and cleanup efforts have been ongoing since the incident, officials have determined that a key section of the building will not be ready in time for the September school start.

Consequently, all Grade 8 students, including those in specialized programs and English as an Additional Language classrooms, will be temporarily relocated to Hardisty School. This school is located approximately 7.5 kilometers southeast of Killarney School.

The temporary move, scheduled to begin on September 1, will continue until repairs are fully completed. Edmonton Public Schools has assured families that bus transportation will be provided between Killarney and Hardisty schools at no cost. The district is also advising families to anticipate increased traffic around both schools during drop-off and pick-up times and is asking for patience from drivers.

"We know this change is sudden and unexpected, but we will do everything we can to make this temporary move as smooth as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding," a statement from the school read. Last year, Killarney School had an enrollment of over 550 students in Grades 7 through 9. Further information is expected to be released by Edmonton Public Schools.
