Killed and Carbonized in Salerno: Victim Identified as Journalist

The charred remains of Luigi Esposito, a 53-year-old sports journalist, were found in Eboli, in the province of Salerno, following a fire in an agricultural area. Firefighters discovered the body amidst burnt brushwood during their efforts to extinguish the blaze late last night. The body was so badly burned that initial identification was impossible, and no personal documents were found at the scene.

Investigators believe Esposito was murdered and his body subsequently set on fire. A breakthrough in the case came with the discovery of an empty vehicle registered to Esposito in the vicinity. Investigations confirmed that traces of the journalist had been lost, leading authorities to identify him as the victim, despite the difficulties in examining the severely damaged body.

Esposito was known for his work as a journalist, contributing to the newspaper La Città di Salerno, the television station Ottochannel, and directing the football news website Tuttosalernitana.com. He held degrees in biology and literature and was a lifelong sports enthusiast. Colleagues knew him as Luca, the name he used for his bylines.

The Salerno prosecutor's office, headed by Raffaele Cantone, is leading the investigation into the murder. Preliminary findings suggest Esposito may have been shot, as shell casings were reportedly recovered by the Carabinieri. The fire, which required the intervention of the fire brigade, may have been set to conceal the crime.
