Kim Mi-soo Elected Goyang City Council Speaker, Vows Cooperation Over Discord

Kim Mi-soo, a three-term lawmaker from the Democratic Party, has been elected as the speaker of the Goyang City Council, set to lead the 10th-term council for the next two years. She secured a significant victory, garnering 32 of the 34 available votes during a plenary session on July 10.

The Goyang City Council currently comprises 18 members from the Democratic Party and 16 from the People Power Party. Kim's substantial vote count, exceeding her party's seat count by 14, is attributed to a broad agreement reached between the floor leaders of both major parties during negotiations over committee chair assignments and other leadership positions.

The delay in electing the speaker was a process where all council members intensely discussed and communicated to create a better council.

In her inaugural address, Kim acknowledged the delay in the speaker selection, framing it as a period of intense discussion and communication among all council members striving to create a better legislative body. She pledged to operate a fair and rational council that respects every member's viewpoint, aiming to build a body that garners public trust.

The council is scheduled to complete its leadership and committee appointments, including the election of vice-speakers and standing committee chairs, by July 13 and 15. Following this, from July 20 to 24, the council will convene for its 306th extraordinary session to receive the first round of administrative reports on Goyang city affairs, marking the beginning of its focused legislative activities centered on public welfare.
