Kim Min-seok Calls for Respect During Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae’s Bereavement

The Democratic Party has put a planned parliamentary confrontation on hold after the father of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae died.

Lawmakers are asked to refrain from directly naming or referring to Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae during the funeral period.

Party leader Kim Min-seok issued a notice on Aug. 31 asking lawmakers to avoid directly referring to Cho during the funeral period. He also urged them to maintain the utmost respect in their public messages and conduct.

The National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee canceled its afternoon plenary meeting. The committee had planned to question Cho about controversy surrounding his recommendation of Supreme Court justice candidates. Committee chair Seo Young-kyo said the meeting would not take place because of the chief justice’s bereavement and offered condolences to the deceased.

We decided not to hold the full committee meeting on current Supreme Court matters because of the chief justice’s bereavement. We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased.

Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik visited the funeral at Pohang St. Mary’s Hospital in North Gyeongsang province. Kang said he had conveyed his deep sympathy to Cho and his family, adding that the president had sent him because he could not attend personally.
