Kim Sang-sik named new head coach for Seoul Samsung Thunders

The Seoul Samsung Thunders have officially appointed Kim Sang-sik as their new head coach, ending a months-long search for a successor to Kim Hyo-beom. Kim, who previously coached the Anyang KGC (now Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters), will take the helm starting with the 2026-2027 KBL season.

Samsung, which has finished last in the league for five consecutive seasons, sought a seasoned coach with championship experience to revitalize the team. Kim Sang-sik emerged as their top choice, lauded by the club for his extensive basketball philosophy and tactical acumen, developed through a long career as both a player and a coach. He commands significant trust both within and outside the organization.

Kim's coaching credentials include leading Anyang KGC to a historic domestic double – winning both the regular season and the championship finals – in his debut season of 2022-2023. His coaching journey began after his playing career, where he served as an assistant coach for several teams, including Samsung, before taking on the head coaching role at Anyang. His return to Samsung marks his first involvement with the club in 12 years since his tenure as an assistant coach.
