King Charles III breaks tradition, will not reside at Buckingham Palace post-renovation

Buckingham Palace will remain a working royal residence but will not be the personal home of King Charles III and Queen Camilla after its extensive renovation.

The British Royal Household's annual Sovereign Grant Report for 2025-2026 reveals that the palace's modernization project, a ten-year initiative, is progressing. The report shows the Sovereign Grant rose to £132.1 million for the fiscal year, with £67.5 million dedicated to the upkeep of occupied royal palaces. This funding supports the official duties of the Royal Family, which included 708 engagements by the King and Queen and 2,273 by other active royals.

James Chalmers, the Royal Household's chief financial officer, highlighted the evolving role of the modern monarchy, drawing parallels to previous reigns in navigating societal changes. The report also notes that Prince William, the heir to the throne, is also voluntarily disclosing tax information, paying £100 million in tax for 2024/25 and directing rental income from a closed prison to the local community.
