King Charles III Rides in Tank, Jokes It's 'Very Slow'

King Charles III experienced a taste of military hardware during his recent visit to the Royal Tank Regiment in Bovington, Dorset. As the regiment's new Colonel-in-Chief, a role he assumed in 2023, the King took the controls of a Challenger 2 tank for a spin on the museum's grounds.

Arriving in a vintage 1920 Rolls-Royce armored car, the same vehicle his late mother Queen Elizabeth II used in 1997, Charles toured the Tank Museum. He engaged with displays detailing the evolution of tanks since World War I and spoke with former ceremonial commanders of the Royal Tank Regiment. During the family day event, he also presented medals to regiment members and met with their families.

During his tour, the King was shown the Challenger 3, the British Army's newest main battle tank. He also learned about the regiment's adoption of modern technologies, including 3D printing for military equipment and the use of drones for reconnaissance and attack missions. When asked about his tank ride, Charles humorously remarked that the vehicle was "very slow."
