King Charles's Principal Private Secretary to Step Down

The search is underway for a new principal private secretary to King Charles, as Sir Clive Alderton prepares to conclude his tenure next year. This influential, behind-the-scenes role involves organizing the King and Queen's official duties, advising on significant events like the Coronation, and engaging with more personal aspects of the monarchy.

Sir Clive, who joined the Royal Household two decades ago, will remain in his post until his 60th birthday in May 2027. He has committed to assisting in the transition to his successor once appointed. A Palace spokesperson expressed the King and Queen's deep gratitude for Sir Clive's "tireless support and wise counsel over the years, and for the enduring loyalty that will ensure a smooth transition to his successor."

During his service, Sir Clive was a constant presence alongside the King and Queen during visits and state occasions. He played a key role in facilitating their smooth transition to the throne in September 2022. The outgoing secretary's annual pay package ranged from £300,000 to £305,000.

As a former diplomat, Sir Clive's position was akin to a permanent secretary in government, wielding significant hidden influence and access to power. Prince Harry notably referred to him as "the Wasp" in his memoir, "Spare," detailing his involvement in discussions surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to step down as working royals and relocate to the U.S. in 2020.
