King Charles III is set to become the first British monarch to publicly reveal the amount of personal taxes he pays, a significant step responding to growing calls for greater financial transparency within the Royal Family. Buckingham Palace announced that the King will publish the total sum of taxes paid for the preceding fiscal year and commit to providing this information annually.

Although British monarchs are not legally obligated to pay income or capital gains tax, the Royal Family has voluntarily followed a practice introduced by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993. However, the exact amounts paid have not been publicly disclosed until now, according to the Daily Mail. King Charles derives income from the management of the Duchy of Lancaster, a substantial portfolio of land, property, and investments. Last year, the duchy generated approximately £27.4 million in revenue for the monarch. The Palace clarified that the King pays income tax at the highest rate after deducting official expenses, as well as capital gains tax on the sale of private assets. However, the forthcoming publication will not include a detailed breakdown of different tax types or precise calculation methods for the total sum.
