King Harald V of Norway Dies at 89

King Harald V of Norway, Europe's longest-reigning monarch, has died at the age of 89. The Norwegian Royal Palace confirmed his passing on August 28, 2026, marking the end of a significant era for the nation. Born on February 21, 1937, Harald became Crown Prince at age 20 following his grandfather King Haakon VII's death in 1957. He officially ascended to the throne on January 17, 1991, after his father King Olav V's death, becoming the first Norwegian-born monarch in over 600 years since Olav IV in 1387.

Harald's reign was characterized by a drive towards modernization and increased openness within the royal family. Working closely with Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon, he aimed to make the monarchy more accessible to the Norwegian public and media. His decision to welcome commoners into the royal family, notably Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Ari Behn, was seen as a symbol of this evolving approach.

The King's health had been a growing concern in recent years. In February 2024, he was hospitalized in Langkawi, Malaysia, for a low heart rate and received a temporary pacemaker. More recently, on August 17, 2026, he was admitted to the hospital due to fluid retention caused by cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia. His condition worsened, and he was placed on a two-week sick leave, receiving antibiotics for a circulatory infection.

On August 24, the palace stated his condition had become "extremely serious." King Harald V passed away at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 AM on August 28, 2026. He is succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Haakon, who will now reign as King Haakon VIII.
