King Harald V’s coffin arrives at Oslo palace chapel ahead of Sept. 9 funeral

King Harald V’s coffin was carried through Oslo’s Royal Palace on Monday in a 10-minute procession before being placed in the palace chapel, where it will remain in state ahead of his funeral.

The monarch’s children, King Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise, joined by his grandchildren and other family members, carried the coffin through different rooms of the palace. Queen Mette-Marit and Harald’s widow, Queen Sonja, followed with their hands clasped.

Harald died on Friday at Oslo University Hospital. His coffin had initially been placed in the palace’s Red Room before the transfer to the chapel. The ceremony followed the same tradition used after the death of Harald’s father, King Olav V, in 1991.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Members of the public may pay their respects from 2 p.m. on Tuesday until 6 p.m. on Sept. 8, with the listed times given in local time. King Haakon VIII is due to swear an oath before Parliament on Tuesday.

Harald was praised as a symbol of an open and tolerant Norway and for leading a modern, modest monarchy. Health problems in recent years had forced him to reduce his official schedule.
