Kingdom Hearts anime series announced; fourth game installment to feature Coco characters

The popular video game saga Kingdom Hearts is expanding its universe with an upcoming anime series adaptation. Set to debut on the Disney+ streaming platform, the series will be developed by the game's creator, Tetsuya Nomura, and the Square Enix creative team. This new project promises to bring the iconic adventure to life with a fresh narrative that will further explore the game's established world. Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, highlighted the excitement of translating a beloved game world into a new visual medium. The Kingdom Hearts franchise, known for its blend of adventure and imagination, has captivated players globally since its inception in 2002, selling over 39 million units. The games feature a story centered on friendship, following Sora and his "keyblade" weapon as he battles "heartless" creatures. Sora travels through various Disney movie worlds, accompanied by Donald Duck and Goofy, searching for lost friends and King Mickey. The franchise notably includes characters from popular Disney and Pixar films like Toy Story, Frozen, and Monsters, Inc.

In addition to the anime series, Square Enix announced new details for the fourth installment of the Kingdom Hearts game. This new game is slated for release in late 2027 and will be available on PC via Epic Games Store and Steam, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A recent preview revealed the integration of characters from Pixar's film Coco, adding elements of Mexican culture to the game's expansive universe. The announcement was made during the ninth edition of the Disney D23 convention.
