KMT Chairwoman's US visit met with low-level reception, sparks criticism

Taiwanese opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Chiu Chen-hsuan's recent trip to the United States has drawn sharp criticism from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), with lawmakers accusing her of undermining Taiwan's interests and aligning with China.

The DPP alleges that Chiu's meetings in the U.S. were with officials of a lower rank than those received by other Taiwanese politicians, including Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, during their own visits. DPP spokesperson and legislator Lin Chu-yin stated that Chiu's actions were akin to "splashing red ink on herself," implying self-inflicted damage to her reputation.

Lin suggested that the U.S. perceived Chiu as leaning towards China and following the path of Chinese President Xi Jinping, thus refusing to grant her a high-level reception. The DPP further criticized Chiu for frequently endorsing Xi Jinping during her trip and being accompanied by individuals involved in overseas Chinese United Front work. This, they claim, has led to the U.S. viewing her with suspicion and questioning the purpose and representativeness of her visit.
