KMT members' hunger strike criticized as 'rotational meals' by online personality

Four members of Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) party initiated a hunger strike protest on July 19, aiming to draw attention to food safety concerns. Taipei City Councilor Yang Chih-tou, along with councilor candidates Lai Yi-jen, Ho Yuan-kai, and Chang Chia-hsin, began their sit-in at Ketagalan Boulevard.

The group plans to continue their hunger strike for 144 hours, concluding on July 25, the same day the KMT has organized a larger street protest. Their objective is to mobilize public opinion and encourage more citizens concerned about food safety to join their cause.

However, the protest has already drawn criticism. Chen Yen-chang, a well-known e-commerce personality often referred to as "Mr. 486," publicly derided the KMT's hunger strike. He shared a schedule of the participants, sarcastically labeling it "rotational meals" and belittling the effort by comparing it unfavorably to his own intermittent fasting regimen.

KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen visited the protesters on the evening of July 19. She provided them with large towels, bottled water, and mosquito repellent, cautioning them about the upcoming weather, which is predicted to include afternoon thunderstorms. She urged them to take care of their health, particularly to avoid heatstroke, which she described as very painful.
