Kogi L-PRES Flags-off Awareness Campaign on Implementation of Mass Artificial Insemination

Kogi State has initiated a significant push to modernize its livestock sector with the launch of a Mass Artificial Insemination (AI) Program. Spearheaded by the Kogi State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (Kogi L-PRES), the campaign aims to enhance livestock productivity across the state's value chain clusters and bolster food security.

We are providing technical support through trained technicians and capacity building to ensure farmers succeed with this new technology.

Dr. Olufemi Bolarin, Commissioner for Livestock Development, emphasized the administration's commitment to modernizing livestock production. He highlighted the key advantages of AI over natural mating, including access to superior genetics for improved milk yields and faster growth, a reduction in disease transmission, and ultimately, lower production costs for farmers. "We are providing technical support through trained technicians and capacity building to ensure farmers succeed with this new technology," Bolarin stated, adding, "The goal is simple: healthier animals, higher productivity, and better income for the livestock farmers."

The State Project Coordinator, Mr. Otaru Abdulkabir Onoruoyiza, detailed the program's design, which focuses on providing farmers with access to superior genetics and essential technical support. This, he explained, is crucial for improving meat and milk production, growth rates, reproduction, and disease resilience. Onoruoyiza acknowledged the vital role of livestock in food security and economic growth but pointed out persistent challenges such as poor breeds and limited access to modern breeding technologies.

The goal is simple: healthier animals, higher productivity, and better income for the livestock farmers.

The initial phase of the Mass AI Program will target 1,500 cows and 500 goats, utilizing both conventional and sexed semen. Eligible farmers can present three to five animals each for the AI exercise. To ensure the program's long-term success and sustainability, Kogi L-PRES has partnered with Genedxx Nigerian Ltd for AI inputs and technical services. Furthermore, the project is constructing three Livestock Improvement and Breeding Centres, one in each senatorial district, to domesticate AI activities and facilitate continuous breed improvement.

Through artificial insemination, livestock farmers will gain access to superior genetic resources and technical support services capable of delivering improved meat and milk production, faster growth rates, enhanced reproductive performance, and greater economic value.
