Korea's 'Getbol' tidal flats expanded on UNESCO World Heritage list

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has officially approved the expansion of South Korea's "Getbol" (Tidal Flat) site, adding new areas in Goheung, Muan, Yeosu, and Seosan to the prestigious World Natural Heritage list. This decision, made during the committee's meeting in Busan, significantly broadens the scope of the "Korean Getbol" World Heritage inscription, which was initially recognized in 2021 with sites in Seocheon and Gochang, as well as Boseong and Suncheon.

The expanded "Korean Getbol" will now encompass a more comprehensive network of these vital coastal ecosystems. The newly added areas, along with the previously recognized sites, will be reorganized under a broader designation. This expansion underscores the global recognition of the ecological importance of these tidal flats, which serve as crucial habitats for a diverse array of species, including migratory birds.

"Korean Getbol" is recognized as one of the world's premier ecological sites, supporting approximately 2,000 species. Its role as a vital stopover point for migratory birds traveling between East Asia and Oceania was a key factor in its initial inscription. The UNESCO evaluation specifically praised the site for its importance in conserving biological diversity, particularly endangered species. This expansion solidifies South Korea's commitment to preserving these unique natural resources for future generations, adding to its existing natural heritage sites like Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.
